Dis/like Christmas…
by Nadia, Happening UK correspondent

Well it’s December again, and Christmas is almost here. This is a holiday I always look forward to but I hate to admit that I don’t like everything about Christmas time… I love the way the streets are decorated for Christmas and how fairy lights in someone’s window can make me smile on a horrible grey day. And let’s be honest – there are a lot of grey days in the UK! There is also such a wonderful festive this time; it feels like people are making a special effort to be nicer to each other at Christmas. But the best thing about it HAS to be the holidays you get! Obviously children here enjoy their holidays from school but this is a rare time that even adults don’t have to go to work. So it’s understandable why they look forward to Christmas more than anyone and start to feel like kids again. Unfortunately not everything about Christmas is fantastic though. The credit crunch will make it a very difficult time for a lot of people in the UK. Because of the economic problems here people don’t have that much money to spend over Christmas and so they might not be celebrating this year like they used to do. The most annoying thing about Christmas is the traffic on the roads – it’s something that you have to get used to because it happens every year, but traffic jams at Christmas will always be irritating! There are also those annoying Christmas commercials on TV around this time of year. They try to sell products over the holiday period which can be awful and not of good taste. But no matter how many things I don’t like about Christmas, it will always be something I look forward to. Seeing family and friends together over the holiday is something I get really excited about and if it snows this year and we get to have a snow fight it will be even better. Oh and I almost forgot, receiving Christmas cards and presents is always nice too! (A photo of the cheerfully decorated house close to mine)
